More and more people use mobile gadgets to access web content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is constantly increasing. To meet this demand, the organization that oversees the universal domain extensions, ICANN, launched the .MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the concept behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with specific requirements. In other words, all dot MOBI websites should be designed to be viewed without problems by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have provoked some worries because the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be created in such a way as to be opened by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
